I've spent countless miles on our local trails with my own pup, and I can tell you firsthand that there's nothing quite like sharing a 5K finish line with your dog.
The running scene in the Harrisburg area has really embraced our canine companions over the past few years, and 2026 looks to be one of the best years yet for dog-friendly events. From the scenic routes along the Susquehanna River to the peaceful trails at Wildwood Park, there are options for every fitness level and every size dog.
Major Dog-Friendly Running Events in Harrisburg Area 2026
Walk for Paws 5K Color Run - May 30, 2026
This is hands-down one of my favorite local events, and it's specifically designed with dogs in mind. The Walk for Paws takes place at the Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 30, 2026, featuring a vibrant 5k color run or a 1 mile walk.
What makes this event special is that it's organized by the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, which serves Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry Counties. The event includes vendors, food trucks, adoptable dogs, and a kid fun zone, making it perfect for the whole family.
Event Details:
- Location: HACC Campus, 1 HACC Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110
- Distance Options: 5K color run or 1 mile walk
- Registration: Opens May 29, 2026 at 12:05 PM EDT
- What's Included: Event t-shirt for all participants

Parking at HACC is typically free and plentiful, which is a huge bonus compared to some downtown events. The campus location also means wide paths and plenty of space for dogs to navigate comfortably without feeling crowded.
Run Wild for Wildwood - August 22, 2026
If you love trail running, this one's for you. The Run Wild for Wildwood 5K & 10K takes place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, with the 10K starting at 8:30 AM and the 5K at 8:45 AM.
The event is held at Wildwood Park in Harrisburg, PA, taking participants counterclockwise around the park on the Wildwood Way trail and down the Towpath along the Pennsylvania Canal and Wildwood Lake. The 10K consists of two laps around the park.
Wildwood Park is one of the most dog-friendly locations in our area. The trails are well-maintained, there are water stations throughout, and the scenery around the lake is absolutely gorgeous. I've run this loop dozens of times with my dog, and it never gets old.
Event Details:
- Location: 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110
- Distance Options: 5K or 10K
- Packet Pickup: August 20-21 at Olewine Nature Center or race day
- Awards: Top 3 male and female in each distance, medals for all finishers
Other Notable Running Events (Check Dog Policies)
Capital 10-Miler & 10K - March 28, 2026
The 16th Annual CAPITAL 10: 10-Miler & 10K – A Run for the Arts will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026. While I haven't confirmed their specific dog policy for 2026, this race follows scenic routes including the riverfront, the Capital Area Greenbelt, and the iconic bridges over the Susquehanna River.
The race starts and finishes on City Island, which is easily accessible and has good parking. Packet pickup is available at Fleet Feet locations in both Mechanicsburg (6416 Carlisle Pike) and Harrisburg (4640 High Pointe Blvd).
Hot Cider Hustle - November 2026
Taking place on City Island in November 2026, this event typically offers 5K and 10K distances. However, I should note that their policy specifically states "No Dogs" for safety reasons. Still worth mentioning since the route along the Capital Area Greenbelt amongst nature's fall beauty is spectacular if you want to train there solo.

This is the crown jewel of Harrisburg-area running. The Capital Area Greenbelt is a 20-mile loop around Pennsylvania's capital city that provides opportunities to hike, ride bicycles, skate, jog, fish, and walk dogs.
The trail passes along the Susquehanna River through Reservoir Park, Riverfront Park, Five Senses Garden, and Wildwood Park and Nature Center. This dog-friendly trail allows you and your pup to explore the natural beauty of the area together.
Best Access Points for Dog Owners:
- City Island - Great parking, restrooms nearby
- Wildwood Park - Water fountains, waste bag stations
- HACC Campus - Wide paths, minimal traffic
- Riverfront Park - Easy downtown access
There is access to the trail at several popular spots where ample parking is available, including City Island, the Five Senses Garden, and the campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC).
Individual Park Highlights
Wildwood Park (100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg)
Wildwood Park features all the natural scenery you could want without having to leave Harrisburg proper, with seven trails across its 229 acres, many of which loop around the gorgeous lake. There are plenty of garbage and water stations for all the doggy businesses to be attended to during the trip.
Reservoir Park
The oldest park in the city, designed in 1872, this 85-acre park features walking trails, and panoramic views of the city. Dogs are allowed at Reservoir Park, making it an ideal spot for dog owners looking for dog-friendly hiking opportunities.
Training Tips for Running with Your Dog
Building Up Distance Safely
Before jumping into a 5K with your dog, make sure they're properly conditioned. I always recommend starting with short 10-15 minute runs and gradually building up distance over several weeks. Not all dogs are natural distance runners, and breeds with short snouts (like French Bulldogs) may struggle more than others.
Essential Gear for Dog-Friendly Races
From my experience running dozens of events with dogs in Central PA, here's what you'll want to bring:
- Hands-free leash - A waist belt with bungee leash makes a huge difference
- Collapsible water bowl - Many races have water stations, but not all are dog-height
- Waste bags - Always carry extra, even if the event provides them
- Dog ID tags - Include your cell phone number in case you get separated
- First aid basics - Paw balm and a small towel for cleaning muddy paws
Weather Considerations
Central PA weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and fall race seasons. For hot weather events (like the August Wildwood run), consider these precautions:
- Start early or choose the shorter distance
- Check the pavement temperature with your hand - if it's too hot for your palm, it's too hot for paw pads
- Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, or reluctance to continue
- Know where water stops are located along the route
Local Running Stores and Resources
There are two running-centric stores in the Harrisburg Area: Fleet Feet (with locations in both Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg) and Inside Track (also with locations in Lancaster & Mechanicsburg).
Fleet Feet Harrisburg hosts group runs on Sundays at 11am and maintains a local running events calendar. These group runs are a great way to meet other dog-running enthusiasts in the area.
Event Registration and Planning Tips
Most of these events fill up, especially the dog-friendly ones, so I always recommend registering as soon as registration opens. The Walk for Paws event, in particular, has grown significantly in popularity over the past few years.
For out-of-town visitors, both Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg offer convenient hotel options that are typically dog-friendly. The Hampton Inn in Camp Hill and several of the hotels near the PA Turnpike in Carlisle have accommodated my friends visiting for races.
Making the Most of Race Day
Arrive early to give your dog time to acclimate to the crowd and noise. Most dogs do better when they have a few minutes to observe the scene before jumping into the action. I usually plan to arrive about 45 minutes before race start for packet pickup and warm-up time.
Don't forget to take photos at the finish line! Many of these events have photographers, but they're not always positioned to capture you and your dog together. The memories you'll make running these local events with your best friend are absolutely priceless.
Whether you're training on the scenic Greenbelt trails or lining up for your first dog-friendly 5K, Central Pennsylvania's running community has embraced our four-legged athletes in a wonderful way. These events offer a perfect blend of fitness, fun, and community spirit that makes our area such a great place for active dog owners.
