Dog-Friendly Memorial Day & Labor Day Events Central PA 2026

Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends offer incredible dog-friendly events across Central PA, from traditional parades to Kipona's famous Dock Dogs competition. Your complete guide to celebrating these holidays with your four-legged family member.

Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends aren't just about marking the beginning and end of summer—they're prime opportunities to get out with your furry friend and enjoy some of the best dog-friendly events Central PA has to offer. As someone who's been navigating the Harrisburg area with my own pup for years, I can tell you these holiday weekends are packed with activities where your four-legged family member is not just welcome, but celebrated.

Memorial Day Weekend: Honoring Heroes with Your Hound

Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 26th, and the Central Pennsylvania area really goes all out. While many of the traditional parades and ceremonies welcome well-behaved, leashed dogs, there are some specific events that are especially pup-friendly.

Memorial Day Parades That Welcome Dogs

The city's Memorial Day Parade will be held on Saturday, May 24, beginning at 10 a.m. It will step off from 8th and Cumberland streets, traveling east on Cumberland St., north on 4th St. and west on Lehman St. before returning to 8th St. A traditional Memorial Day service will be held at Monument Park following the parade. This is one of my favorite parades to attend with dogs—the route is manageable, and there's plenty of space to position yourself away from crowds if your pup gets overwhelmed.

The Boiling Springs Memorial Day Parade will take place on Sunday, May 24, starting at 1 p.m. The parade will step off from Boiling Springs High School and proceed to the Memorial Clock Tower at Children's Lake, where a memorial ceremony and community picnic will follow. The event is organized by VFW Post 8851. The picnic afterward is particularly nice for dogs—lots of open space and usually a pretty relaxed atmosphere.

The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at 19th and Market Street, traveling west to 24th Street, north to Walnut Street and finishing at the Camp Hill Fire Station. Camp Hill's parade is especially dog-friendly, and I always see plenty of families with their pups lining Market Street.

City Island Memorial Day Activities

3rd Annual Platinum Memorial Day 5k was hosted at City Island Harrisburg, PA. While this specific event was from previous years, City Island consistently hosts Memorial Day activities that are perfect for dogs. The island itself is one of the most dog-friendly spots in Harrisburg—just remember to keep your pup leashed and bring water, especially if it's a warm May day.

Memorial Day Dog Safety Tips

Memorial Day weekend can be overwhelming for dogs with all the crowds, music, and festivities. I always recommend bringing a portable water bowl and keeping your dog's regular routine as much as possible. If you're planning to attend multiple events, consider making a stop at Happy Tails Dog Park in Kohl Memorial Park between activities to let your pup decompress.

Labor Day Weekend: Kipona Festival and Beyond

Labor Day weekend is when Harrisburg truly shines for dog lovers, thanks primarily to the legendary Kipona Festival. This year, Labor Day falls on September 1, 2026, making the festival weekend August 30 - September 1.

Kipona Festival: A Dog's Paradise

The 109th Kipona Festival will return to Harrisburg for Labor Day weekend, bringing food, family activities, music and cultural experiences. The festival, which runs from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1, will take place along N. Front Street and Riverfront Park, with activities on City Island as well.

What makes Kipona special for dog owners is the incredible Keystone Dock Dogs event on City Island where dogs can compete in the long jump, vertical jump and speed retrieve competitions, all weekend. No experience is needed to participate. I've watched this event for years, and it's absolutely thrilling whether you're competing or just spectating. Even if your dog isn't a natural athlete, it's worth walking over to City Island to watch—the enthusiasm is infectious.

The Keystone Dock Dogs will also return to the festival this year, giving pet owners and their pups a chance to get in on the fun. Registration typically opens a few weeks before the festival, so keep an eye on the Kipona website if you're interested in entering your dog.

Navigating Kipona with Your Dog

As always, the festival will offer selections from 25 food trucks and a beer and wine garden. Additionally, 15 local bands and musicians will perform on a stage near State Street. Another stage at Market Street will feature multicultural dance groups and bands.

The festival can get incredibly crowded, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I always recommend arriving early in the morning or later in the evening if you're bringing your dog. Metered street parking is free on Sunday and Monday, for the holiday. This makes it easier to find parking close to the action without stressing about fees.

WoofStock: The Ultimate Dog Festival

While WoofStock typically happens in late September rather than Labor Day weekend specifically, it's worth mentioning as the crown jewel of Central PA dog events. Organizers boast that WoofStock is the largest festival on the East Coast for dogs and their humans. There's no better way to appreciate Harrisburg with your pets than this outstanding event, hosted right on the riverfront at what is arguably the city's most picturesque green space.

the annual event is thrown by the Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance (CPAA). Proceeds help fund foster care operations and CPAA's Hounds of Prison Education training program for rescued dogs at the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill. It's truly a celebration of everything we love about dogs, and attending feels like you're part of something bigger.

Other Holiday Weekend Dog-Friendly Activities

Bark for Life Events

The event is held at the beautiful outdoor area by the Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown, PA. There will be a Strut Your Mutt Dog Parade, games for dogs and kids, contests, giveaways, animal adoptions, vendors, and food trucks. Donations are accepted not only for Relay for Life teams but also for blankets, food, treats, cleaning supplies, and more for local rescues. While this event doesn't always fall on holiday weekends, it's worth checking the American Cancer Society's schedule as dates can vary year to year.

Ever Grain Brewing Company

Ever Grain Brewing Co. is dog-friendly, with a large area set aside for events like these, as well as a permanent outdoor patio and green space. It's the perfect place for you and your pooch to enjoy a big event — or just a lazy afternoon — while enjoying cornhole, companionship, and occasional live concerts. Their outdoor space in Camp Hill has become a real hub for dog owners, and they often host special events during holiday weekends.

Fort Hunter Park Memorial Ride

Memorial Ride was hosted at Fort Hunter Park. Fort Hunter Park is one of my go-to spots year-round for hiking with dogs, and they often have special events during holiday weekends. The mansion grounds and trails along the Susquehanna are beautiful, and there's usually plenty of space for dogs to explore safely on-leash.

Dog Shows and Competitions

For those interested in more structured canine activities, The Harrisburg Kennel Club (HKC) is an American Kennel Club (AKC) licensed member club, approved to hold AKC all-breed conformation shows, along with other events. We hold two conformation all-breed dog shows each year in April as part of the FIVE-DAY Blue & Gray Cluster. The cluster is held INDOORs at the PA Farm Show Complex, Giant Expo Hall, Harrisburg, PA. While this specific cluster happens in April, keep an eye out for other AKC events throughout the year.

WOW! (Conformation Shows, Obedience/Rally Trials, Agility Trials, Scent Work Trials, Fast CAT Trials, and Herding Workshops!) Our Herding Fun Days weekend is a great experience and lots of fun for dogs six months and older! The Harrisburg Shetland Sheepdog Club hosts various events throughout the year that welcome spectators and their dogs.

Planning Tips for Holiday Weekend Success

After years of attending these events with dogs, here are my tried-and-true tips:

Arrive Early: Holiday events get crowded quickly. Getting there early means better parking, less overwhelming crowds for your dog, and often cooler temperatures.

Bring the Essentials: Portable water bowl, waste bags, a comfortable leash (not retractable for crowded events), and maybe a small towel if your dog might get wet from dock diving or fountain play.

Know Your Dog's Limits: Some dogs thrive in crowds and chaos, others prefer quieter activities. There's no shame in calling it a day early if your pup is getting overwhelmed.

Have a Backup Plan: If you're planning daycare visits around these busy weekends, I'd recommend checking with places like Greenlin Pet Resorts in Camp Hill well in advance, as holiday weekends tend to fill up quickly.

Safety Considerations

Holiday weekends often mean more traffic, more people, and more distractions. I always recommend keeping dogs leashed even in areas where it might not be strictly required. The combination of excited crowds, food vendors, and other dogs can be overwhelming even for well-trained pets.

For water activities during Kipona, especially if your dog participates in dock diving, make sure they're comfortable around water and consider bringing a towel. The Susquehanna can have currents, so supervised water play is essential.

Making the Most of Holiday Weekends

What I love about Memorial Day and Labor Day in Central PA is how many options there are. Whether you want to honor military service members at a traditional parade, watch dogs fly through the air at Kipona's dock diving, or just enjoy a relaxed afternoon at a dog-friendly brewery, there's something for every pup's personality.

These weekends are also perfect opportunities to explore parts of the area you might not normally visit. The Memorial Day events in Boiling Springs, for example, give you a chance to explore Cumberland County, while Kipona puts you right in the heart of downtown Harrisburg's revitalization.

Don't forget that both weekends often feature beautiful weather perfect for exploring our amazing trail system. The Capital Area Greenbelt connects many of these event locations, and walking portions of it with your dog between events can be a great way to help them decompress.

Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends in Central PA offer some of the best opportunities all year to celebrate with your four-legged family member. From honoring heroes to watching dogs show off their athletic skills, these holidays remind us why the Harrisburg area is such a wonderful place to be a dog owner. Mark your calendars, prep your pup, and get ready for two of the most dog-friendly weekends of the year.
