Planning the Perfect Beach Day with Your Pup from Harrisburg
Living in Central PA, we might not have ocean beaches, but we've got some pretty fantastic lakefront spots where your four-legged family member can splash, swim, and play. After exploring what's within a reasonable drive from our area, I've put together this guide to the best dog-friendly beaches and water spots you can reach in two hours or less from Harrisburg.
Whether you've got a water-loving Lab who needs to burn some energy or a cautious first-timer who just wants to dip their paws, there are options for every dog and every family's adventure level.
Blue Marsh Lake Dog Beach - The Local Favorite (45 minutes)
There's no beach officially called "Dog Beach" at Blue Marsh Lake, a recreation area just north of Reading managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. However, the gravel beach unofficially known as Dog Beach is a pleasant stretch of lakeshore that's perfect for friendly dogs looking to swim.
To park close to Dog Beach, you can park at the trailhead just north of Tulpehocken Creek or a little farther south in the parking area near Water Road. From there you'll hop on the Lake Border Trail for a short hike to the beach area, which is located along the trail and situated northeast of the Blue Marsh Dam.
This spot is incredibly popular with local dog owners, and for good reason. This trail provides an easy hike with a stop at "Dog Beach" for the pup(s) to cool off, retrieve sticks, or splash in the lake with other dogs. This is a single-track trail with numerous blind turns. The socialization opportunities are fantastic if your pup enjoys making new friends.
What to Know: Dogs must be leashed, but the atmosphere is relaxed and dog-focused. The "beach" is more gravel than sand, so bring water shoes if your feet are sensitive. Parking can fill up on weekends, so arriving early (before 10 AM) is your best bet.
Address: Blue Marsh Lake, 1268 Palisades Dr, Leesport, PA 19533
Drive Time: 45 minutes from Harrisburg

Presque Isle State Park - Pennsylvania's Only "Seashore" (2 hours)
Presque Isle State Park is a 3,112-acre Pennsylvania State Park on an arching, sandy peninsula jutting into Lake Erie, 4 miles west of the city of Erie. It has 13 miles of roads, 21 miles of recreational trails, 13 beaches for swimming, and a marina.
This is the crown jewel of Pennsylvania beaches, and yes, it's worth the two-hour drive for a special weekend getaway. Dogs are allowed on the sand and in the water outside the guarded swim zones, but they must be on a leash. Inside the guarded areas, dogs are only allowed in the tree line.
In a 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice poll, Lake Erie was named Best Lake and Best Lake for Water Sports in the country and was ranked third in the Best Lake for Swimming category. Swimming is permitted on guarded beaches, which are numbered and marked throughout the park.
The experience here truly feels like being at the oceanâsandy beaches, waves, and endless water stretching to the horizon. Your dog will love the space to run and the chance to experience something completely different from our local lakes.
What to Know: It's open every day of the year from 5:00 A.M. until sunset. Swimming is only allowed in the zones marked and guarded by lifeguards. Dogs can play in unguarded areas, which still offer plenty of beach access.

Mauch Chunk Lake Park - Scenic Pocono Experience (1.5 hours)
Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Jim Thorpe, PA, is pet friendly! While at the park you can enjoy the art of Mother Nature on the 2.8-mile Mauch Chunk Lake, walk or bike the renovated 16-mile Switchback Gravity Railroad and many other trails throughout the park.
Here's the catch with this beautiful spot: Pets are permitted within the picnic area and other areas of the park, but must be confined to a leash not exceeding 6-feet in length. Owners must clean up after their pets and pets are not permitted on the beach or in the camping area.
While your pup can't access the official swimming beach, Great little spot to watch your pup swim or relax by the lake... Very peaceful and clean... There are other lake access points throughout the park where dogs can enjoy the water.
The drive through Jim Thorpe alone makes this trip worthwhileâit's one of Pennsylvania's most charming historic towns, and the fall foliage season is absolutely spectacular.
Address: 625 Lentz Trail, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229
Drive Time: 1.5 hours from Harrisburg

Wissahickon Valley Park "Doggy Beach" - Philadelphia Day Trip (2 hours)
Wissahickon Valley Park is an urban oasis in Philadelphia, located in the northwest part of the city. The Wissahickon Creek winds its way through the roughly 1,800 acres of woodland that make up this park. And just under and around the Kitchens Lane Bridge, you can find a lovely area of the creek known as "Doggy Beach" where locals love to bring their pups to teach them to swim or to just let them cool off from the Philly heat.
This is a completely different experience from the lake beachesâit's a creek setting with smaller, more intimate swimming holes. Note that park rules require dogs to be on leash at all times.
Perfect for combining with a Philadelphia adventure. You could hit some dog-friendly restaurants in the city afterward and make it a full day trip.
What to Know: Urban park setting, so expect more people and activity. Creek water rather than lake swimming.

Local Water Spots Closer to Home (Under 1 Hour)
Memorial Lake State Park, Grantville
Bring Fido to the pet-friendly Memorial Lake State Park in Grantville, PA. Leashed furry friends are welcome at this 230-acre recreation area, which features walking paths and picnic areas. Pets are permitted, but must be leashed and cleaned up after.
While primarily a walking and picnic destination, the lake offers some water access for dogs who want to wade and cool off.
Drive Time: 30 minutes from Harrisburg
Susquehanna River Access Points
Right in our backyard, the Susquehanna has numerous access points where dogs can enjoy the water. City Island, Riverfront Park, and the Greenbelt trail all offer opportunities for your pup to get their paws wet, though these are more for wading than swimming.
Planning Your Dog Beach Adventure
What to Pack
- Water and bowl: Always bring fresh drinking water, especially for lake swimming
- Towels: For both you and your pup
- Leash and waste bags: Required at all locations
- Sunscreen: Yes, dogs can get sunburned too, especially on noses and ear tips
- First aid basics: Including tweezers for removing burrs or splinters
- Favorite water toy: A floating tennis ball or bumper for retrieving games
Safety Considerations
Before heading out, consider your dog's swimming ability and comfort level with water. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and even strong swimmers can get tired in larger bodies of water.
You should find information posted online regarding dog rules for a specific beach, but it is important to read the rules posted outside the entrance to the beach to get the most up-to-date and accurate rules regarding dogs at the beach. The rules across all Pennsylvania beaches, however, are generally the same.
Watch for blue-green algae warnings, especially during hot summer months. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) Philadelphia District at Blue Marsh Lake will be reopening the swim beach for Saturday, July 19, 2025, however the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Status will be monitoredâthese warnings apply to dogs too.
Best Times to Visit
Early morning (before 10 AM) and late afternoon (after 4 PM) tend to be less crowded and cooler for your pup. Weekdays are obviously less busy than weekends, and spring and fall can actually be ideal seasonsâcooler temperatures mean your dog won't overheat as easily.
Making the Most of Your Trip
For longer drives like Presque Isle, consider making it a weekend getaway. Erie has several dog-friendly hotels, and the area offers plenty of other activities. Jim Thorpe is another destination where you can easily spend a full weekend exploring historic sites, hiking trails, and enjoying the charming downtown.
If you're looking for regular swimming sessions closer to home, Blue Marsh Dog Beach is definitely your best bet. The community of dog owners there is welcoming, and you'll likely find other Harrisburg-area folks making the same trip.
Remember to check current conditions and any seasonal restrictions before heading out. Water levels, algae conditions, and park rules can all change, especially during extreme weather periods.
