Within three hours of Harrisburg, there are some fantastic options for dogs who love the waterâfrom Pennsylvania's own Lake Erie shores to the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches. Here's your complete guide to the best dog-friendly water destinations reachable from our area.
Pennsylvania's Crown Jewel: Presque Isle State Park (2.5 Hours)
Let's start with Pennsylvania's best-kept secret for dog owners: Beach 11 at Presque Isle State Park in Erie is renowned for its dog-friendliness. The golden sands and cool blue waters offer a peaceful respite from the summer heat. City dwellers from Pittsburgh, located 2.5 hours away, can escape for a day of relaxation and sea breezes.
Presque Isle State Park is a National Natural Landmark that curves into Lake Erie, featuring seven miles of sandy beaches, and the only surf swimming in Pennsylvania. With its miles of beaches and acres of waterfront outdoor recreation, Presque Isle provides the perfect summer getaway.
Dog Rules at Presque Isle
On unguarded beaches, dogs are permitted both on the sand and in the water. In all spaces, dogs must be leashed at all times. Inside designated guarded zones, leashed dogs are permitted in the tree line area only. Outside of designated guarded zones, leashed dogs are permitted on the sand and in the water.
Dogs are welcome in the park and on the beaches. As long as it's outside the designated swim zones, dogs can play along the sand or splash in the water at Presque Isle. Just remember to keep them leashed!

Blue Marsh Lake (1.5 Hours)
There's no beach officially called "Dog Beach" at Blue Marsh Lake, a recreation area just north of Reading managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. However, the gravel beach unofficially known as Dog Beach is a pleasant stretch of lakeshore that's perfect for friendly dogs looking to swim. You can get to Dog Beach via a short hike on the Lake Border Trail.
To park close to Dog Beach, you can park at the trailhead just north of Tulpehocken Creek or a little farther south in the parking area near Water Road. From there you'll hop on the Lake Border Trail for a short hike to the beach area, which is located along the trail and situated northeast of the Blue Marsh Dam.
Pine Grove Furnace State Park (45 Minutes)
About a 45-minute southwest drive from Harrisburg brings you to Pine Grove Furnace State Park, home to swimming and other opportunities in the area. With two of the best lakes to swim at in Pennsylvania, Pine Grove Furnace State Park is sure to offer a fantastic time cooling off and soaking up the sun during your visit.
Gifford Pinchot State Park (25 Minutes)
Of the parks included in this list, Gifford Pinchot State Park is the closest to the city of Harrisburg, with a drive of about 25 minutes between the two destinations. This proximity makes it an easy place to visit at any time of day. Take a quick ride over to Gifford Pinchot State Park and experience all it has to offer, including swimming. Pinchot Lake draws people from all over the surrounding areas for beach and water fun. Kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing offer hours of fun as you skim across 340 acres of the lake's flat, shimmering surface.
Jersey Shore Dog Beaches (2-3 Hours)
The Jersey Shore offers some of the best dog beach experiences on the East Coast, though timing is everything:
Asbury Park
Asbury Park, New Jersey delivers a howling good time for people and pups, but the pooch's fave is the Eighth Avenue Dog Beach, where leashes are optional! Pups running on the sand and jumping the waves will warm a dog-lover's heart! Open all day in the off-season and from 6 pm to 8:30 am in the summer, this is a must-do!
Wildwood Dog Beach
If sand-covered paws and warm water for swimming are what you and Fido are after, Wildwood Dog Beach is pawrfect! Open from 6 am to dusk every day, year-round, your leashed pupper will have a ball! Take a walkie down the 2-block-long beach, sit in the sand and catch some rays, or dip a paw into the water.
This designated dog beach area features a 25-foot-high fire hydrant sculpture, and stretches to nearly two city blocks wide. Dogs are able to join their families on the beach and swim in the ocean. Fresh water and waste bags are available. All dogs must remain on leashes unless in the designated fenced in area, which has separate areas for small dogs and large dogs as well as obstacles, toys, water, waste bags and a shaded area for sitting.
Seasonal Restrictions
Most Jersey Shore beaches follow similar patterns: In season (Memorial DayâSept 15): No dogs allowed on the beach, Boardwalk, or in the oceanâwhether leashed or off-leash. Off season (Sept 16âMemorial Day): Leashed dogs are allowed on beaches.

"Pets are allowed in our seashore parks, but Delaware State Law prohibits them from all swimming and sunbathing beaches from May 1 to September 30. Park rules and regulations also restrict pets from areas such as surfboarding and sailboarding beaches and shorebird nesting areas."
