Additionally, if you have another dog or dogs at home, we will work with you to schedule an introduction with your current dog(s). This is crucial for multi-pet households.

Special Considerations for Central PA Adopters

Geographic Restrictions

Some rescues prioritize local adoptions. Animals are PRIMARILY available for adoption to residents living within the adoption area of the Central PA Humane Society, including Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon, Cambria, Somerset, Centre and Clearfield counties. Applicants outside these areas and the state of PA will still be considered but on a case by case basis.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Most cities in Pennsylvania have no breed-specific legislation, meaning you can adopt whatever breed of dog you choose. This makes our area particularly welcoming for all types of dogs, including those breeds that face restrictions elsewhere.

Licensing Requirements

Don't forget about licensing! If the pet you're adopting is 3 months or older, you'll need to purchase a license (and if you have a pet younger than 3 months, you'll have to get a license once it reaches this age). You'll get your Pennsylvania dog license from your County Treasurer. Some shelters will let you apply for a license on-site or include it as part of the adoption fee.

Post-Adoption Support and Responsibilities

Central PA shelters take their commitment to successful adoptions seriously. Any adopted animal will require training, patience and ample time to adjust to its new home. While we carefully monitor animals surrendered to CPHS, we have limited knowledge of their background. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the health, behavior, age, gender, health care, or breed of any animal adopted from the shelter.

Remember that packet information that the rescue staff gave you during the adoption process? Find the medical information and bring it to your pet's first vet visit. Try to schedule this visit within a week or two of adoption. Getting the vet-dog introduction out of the way early will help your pet adjust to its new life. Also, it'll give your vet a chance to catch any mild ailments that the shelter missed (such as kennel cough) before they get too bad.

Return Policies

Most reputable rescues have return policies that protect both you and the animal. If a personal financial, health or some other situation arises and you cannot keep your pet, you are required to return the pet to CPHS. This way the pet can be re-adopted to another qualified family.

Supporting Your Local Adoption Community

Even if you're not ready to adopt right now, there are many ways to support dog adoption in our area. In 2024, more than 0 pets were saved thanks to the dedication of our volunteer foster families. Fostering saves two lives – the life of the animal in your home and the one we now have space for in the shelter. Our foster families create the capacity for us to care for more animals, and for pets struggling in the shelter environment, a foster family's loving home can make a life-saving difference. Join our foster team to help pets heal, grow, and prepare for their forever home.

Many organizations also run regular fundraising events. For example, We raised $15,000 for the animals in our kennels and we could NOT have done it without you! from Cumberland Valley's recent music festival.

Getting Started on Your Adoption Journey

Ready to begin? Start by browsing available dogs online, but remember that We do get puppies regularly, but they are not always posted on our website. We contact our approved puppy adopters when we have puppies available to meet, so please complete an application if you are interested in adopting a puppy.

Consider what type of dog fits your lifestyle. Many have already lived with a human family and have the basic training, socialization, and cooperative skills they need to become part of your household.
